Tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word “turmali,” the name historically given to a mixed parcel of colored gems in the island of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. It was easily confused with a mix of other minerals due to its wide range of colors. There are over 110 different hues of Green to Blue Tourmaline.
Primary sources include Afghanistan, Brazil, Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, Zambia, and Maine and California in the USA.
For centuries, Green Tourmalines have been heated to enhance their color. This adjustment is stable and permanent. Tourmaline is one of the October birthstones and the 8th Anniversary Gem.
