You might be worrying about how you are going to find your girlfriend's ring size without ruining your proposal plans. Have no fear — we’ll show you a few tricks to get the right engagement ring sizing and still keep it a surprise:
1. Ask Her Directly
If you ask your girlfriend her ring size, she’ll likely suspect a proposal. However, she still won’t know when or how. You might want to ask her directly if you plan on buying a ring that may be difficult to resize.
2. Be Sneaky
Perhaps the easiest way to get her ring size without her knowing is to use a ring she already owns. Wait until your girlfriend is not around and check her jewelry box for a ring you’ve seen her wear on the ring finger of her left hand. Take the ring to a jeweler and get her size.
You can also slip the ring on your finger and mark how far the ring goes down with a marker. A jeweler may be able to find the right size according to the spot you marked.
3. Ask Friends or Family
Chances are, friends or family do not know your girlfriend's ring size. However, it might be worth it to ask.
Maybe a friend or relative has bought her a ring in the past or have handed down jewelry to her. Perhaps they share the same ring size. If you do not mind revealing your plan to propose, it’s worth considering this option if you cannot figure out her ring size any other way.
4. Use a Ring Size Chart
Take a ring from her jewelry box and match it to a ring size chart. There are plenty of free printable ring charts online you can use. All you need to do is print out the chart and align it with the different sized rings on the paper.
You might want to use a ring size chart instead of taking a ring to a jeweler if there’s a chance your girlfriend will notice her ring missing This can be done quickly, too. For example, if your girlfriend often removes her rings while she’s washing dishes, you can snatch a ring when she steps away for a moment. Quickly line up the ring on your ring chart and jot down her size. However, keep in mind that this method is not as accurate as an actual measurement.
5. Remember That Resizing Is an Option
If sizing does not work out, don’t panic. There is no need to postpone your plans or give away any surprises if you are struggling to find out her ring size.
After you’ve proposed, simply take the ring into the jeweler and get it resized. The ring should stay on her finger and feel comfortable. It might be a good idea to get the ring resized even if it fits, to make sure it fits perfectly.Â
Do keep in mind, though, that some rings are limited in how much they can be resized. Discuss the possibility of resizing with your jeweler before you purchase a ring so you have a better idea of what to expect.
