Mountz Jewelers Teams Up with The Salvation Army to Evaluate Generous Gold & Silver Donations

Camp Hill, PA (December 7, 2020)- November 30th was an exciting day for the volunteers of The Salvation Army Harrisburg. Earlier in the day, an anonymous donor dropped a 1 oz. gold piece in one of their red collection kettles outside of the Lower Paxton Township Karns. Initially volunteers were shocked, but then realized they should check on the legitimacy of the donation. That is when they turned to Mountz Jewelers for help.

Mountz is well versed in testing metals and determining current market value. However, Tonia Leitzel Ulsh (President, and Co-Owner of Mountz Jewelers) knew it was not a typical evaluation. “I mean, as soon as I saw it, I knew that it was something special for them,” Ulsh said. In honor of the anonymous donor’s kind actions, Mountz priced and evaluated the gold piece for free, making sure The Salvation Army got every penny of the donation.

When asked about the gold piece, Tonia explained that community always comes first and this was no different. “We are a family-owned business. We live in this community. We want it to thrive, and so we are doing this as something special for The Salvation Army, so they can get the most of what their donation was.” Imagine The Salvation Army’s surprise when Mountz determined the worth of the piece at $1,700. “It’s an easy determination because there are no alloys added to it, really. So, it’s almost pure gold, and it’s an easy determination of value,” Ulsh added. Surprisingly, the now famous 1 oz. gold piece was not the only precious metal donated this season that Mountz evaluated, but it was the most valuable.

Inspired by this generous new trend, The Salvation Army of Harrisburg and Carlisle, with the help of Mountz Jewelers, will continue accepting gold or silver donations this holiday season. Mountz will also be continuing their pro-bono evaluations with no commissions or fees. The jewelry store wants to use this moment to encourage everyone to do what they can to help others in need during this particularly challenging year. “It takes all of us working together to get through all of this, and on the other side, it’s going to be brighter days for everyone,” Ulsh said.
